Job Description / Role:

The Assistant Head of Primary – Teaching & Learning plays a pivotal role in providing proactive and responsive instructional leadership to engage staff, students, and families in the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning. The role ensures that academic, curricular, and learning pathways for all Primary students are coherent, rigorous, and aligned with the school’s American curriculum framework and improvement priorities.

Reporting to the Head of Primary, the Assistant Head of Primary – Teaching & Learning supports and promotes a culture of growth, purpose, and belonging, where high expectations for learning are balanced with support, reflection, and continuous improvement across the Primary School. The role maintains an active teaching commitment of up to 50%.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of all students in line with school policies.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, policy development, and the delivery of school priorities.
  • Lead and support high standards of teaching through learning walks, classroom observations, and professional feedback.
  • Provide strategic leadership for curriculum alignment (AERO standards) and oversee assessment practices (MAP, internal benchmarks).
  • Lead data-informed decision-making by analyzing student performance and trends.
  • Line manage and support Primary Subject Leads and collaborate with Grade Level Leaders.
  • Design and deliver professional development opportunities and mentor staff.
  • Serve as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (Deputy DSL).

Experience Required: Minimum of three years of leadership experience in a Primary or comparable school setting; experience leading teaching and learning, curriculum development, and assessment practices; experience supporting teacher development through coaching and feedback; experience working within an American or American-international curriculum framework is strongly preferred.

Education Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; a Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field is preferred.

Skills Required:

  • Strong understanding of effective instructional practices and curriculum design in Primary education.
  • Proficiency in using student performance data to inform instructional improvement.
  • Ability to lead, support, and evaluate instructional staff and subject leaders.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinking abilities with a focus on classroom connection.
